HISTORY OF SUN CITY HOTELS

Sun City lies on the territory of the former homeland of Bophuthatswana. Bophuthatswana was classified as an independent state by South Africa's apartheid regime. Therefore it could provide "immoral" entertainment such as gambling and topless revue shows, which were banned in South Africa's apartheid regime. A 90 minute drive from Johannesburg ensured that it was a popular weekend destination. Many famous musicians such as Queen and Elton John also performed in the Sun City Super Bowl. Hotels at Sun City have continued to flourish since Bophutatswana was incorporated in the new South Africa.

Sun City was founded by Sol Kerzner. Born in 1935 in Johannesburg to poor Russian immigrants, his family eventually went into the business of hotels and Kerzner went on to create the most successful hotel group within South Africa. With the conceptualisation of the Sun City Hotels, he subsequently stepped onto the international stage to become the innovative developer behind well-known names such as Atlantis in the Bahamas.
